What causes it?
CO poisoning is normally caused by small number of problems; a lack of purpose-provided ventilation for your
appliance, or badly maintained or wrongly installed appliances. A particularly common cause is blocked ventilation.

Don’t become a statistic!

Every year hundreds of people in the UK suffer the effects of Carbon Monoxide poisoning

and even lose their lives to this very preventable problem. Simple steps like regular

maintenance of your gas appliances by a CORGI-registered installer or the fitting of a

CO alarm could make a real difference. Darren Mayne of Mayne Gas Heating explains more:

Where does it come from?
All fossil fuels produce fumes when burned, known as products of combustion. When

insufficient air is burned to complete the burn process, incomplete combustion occurs
and carbon monoxide is formed very quickly. If this continues, the situation rapidly
worsens as the appliance tries to re-burn foul air and a very noxious atmosphere forms

as the oxygen levels in the room plummet. This is a deadly cocktail. Carbon Monoxide is

colourless, odourless and tasteless, making it even more dangerous. However, the

symptoms of being overcome by it are more obvious. The body absorbs CO nearly 250

times more easily than it does oxygen, very quickly starving your organs and causing

symptoms often confused with flu – dizziness, nausea and headaches, among others If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, however mild, seek medical help. Immediately
